What is the combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen? ›

Oxycodone and acetaminophen combination is used to relieve pain severe enough to require opioid treatment and when other pain medicines did not work well enough or cannot be tolerated.

When oxycodone/acetaminophen is swallowed, it gets absorbed by your body. It will begin working to relieve pain in about 15 to 30 minutes, although it reaches its peak effect in 1 hour. It will continue to work for 3 to 6 hours.

Oxycodone and acetaminophen tablets can make you sleepy, dizzy, or lightheaded. Drink alcohol or use prescription or over-the-counter medicines that contain alcohol. Using products containing alcohol during treatment with oxycodone and acetaminophen tablets may cause you to overdose and die.

Percocet® 10 mg/325 mg tablets (10 mg of oxycodone and 325 mg of acetaminophen) 1 tablet every 6 hours as needed.

Morphine is a stronger opioid drug. Other examples of strong opioids include diamorphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, methadone and buprenorphine. Opioid medicines come in many forms including tablets, capsules, liquids, skin patches and injections.

One key difference is that oxycodone is more potent than hydrocodone. This means that it takes less oxycodone to produce the same effects as hydrocodone. Oxycodone is also more likely to be abused than hydrocodone because it produces stronger effects. This also means that oxycodone has a higher risk of overdose.

Call your doctor right away if you have worsening of pain, increased sensitivity to pain, or new pain after taking this medicine. These may be symptoms of opioid-induced hyperalgesia and allodynia. This medicine may cause adrenal gland problems.

Is oxycodone or Percocet more effective? Neither medication is more effective than the other, although the acetaminophen in Percocet affects different receptors than oxycodone in the pain pathway. The choice of medication depends on the type of pain and the health of the individual.

This medicine may make you dizzy, drowsy, or lightheaded. Do not drive or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.
