Montana State, off to a 4-0 beginning under new Coach Bruce Harold-son, hosts Pacific at Bozeman. And Idaho puts its modest three-game winning streak on the line at Roosevelt University at Chicago, then invades Kentucky for a game with seventh-rated Louisville. Under Monson and with transfer guard Don Newman averaging nearly 23 points a game, the Vandals have run up a 3-1 record this season.

And if they beat Roosevelt Thursday night, the Vandals will equal last year's victory total for the entire season. Monson said it's important to get his team thinking positively. In Wednesday night action, forward Greg Slider scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Portland State to a 69-54 over Montana State in Portland. And in Pullman, Washington State rallied after a slow start to defeat Northern Arizona 86-70. In other Big Sky games this week, Weber State, 4-1, invades Long Beach State Thursday.

Friday night it's Gon-zaga hosting Central Washington. Saturday's games feature Boise State at Utah State, Pacific at Montana State, Northern Arizona at Oregon and Texas Wesleyan plays Weber at Ogden. Portland State is at Gon-zaga in a Sunday game. MSU's Haroldson says he's worried about Pacific. "They have two 6-9 players and a well-disciplined team.

They'll be extremely tough." "We're obviously becoming more familiar with what I want done. We're establishing confidence in what we're doing, and that's been improved because of our winning," he said. "The kids need something like this," said Monson. "Now they've got to be feeling a little bit more like they can win." "The Louisville game probably will be a complete mismatch. Our kids will play hard and we'll probably do some of the things we hope we can win with.

But realistically, beating Lousisville would be one of the shockers of the season," said Monson. When Idaho beat Great Falls by 47 points last week, it was the school's biggest victory in 21 years. Idaho has a lot of room to improve. The Vandals won only 16 games the last three seasons, losing 62. Boise Slate also has a lot of room to improve.

Tuesday's defeat at the hands of Midwestern of Texa6 left the Broncos winless in six games. "We're not getting the mileage we have to out of our guards," said Coach Bus Connor. "They couldn't penetrate and get the ball where we wanted." Idaho State also hopes for improvement. The Bengals, picked as a preseason contender, haven't won yet. The team doesn't play again until the Utah Classic Dec.

"The pay scale was completely different. When I got back there, they said we had to live in dorms for the" first month. We had to play without any pay at all, that entire month of November," she said. The club offered to pay living expenses, but wouldn't furnish transportation. She said she got a feeling early that things wouldn't be as promised when she found the Hustle played at a gymnasium located in an orphanage.

The team held an open tryout. Miss Burrell said some of the players that showed up wouldn't make good junior high basketballers. After two practices, Miss Burrell said she decided pro ball wasn't for her. Then she found she had been traded to Milwaukee. She returned to Boise, where she has a part-time coaching job at Boise High School.

She said she will work for a master's degree and hopes to coach. She said she thinks women's pro basketball will make it. "But they are going to have a hard time with second-class players," she said. CMR Continued from page 11, column 2 The Rustlers will have fewer returning state placers than in many years. The only returning place-winners are Rob Rodger, who fin- ished second at 138 and is up to 145 this year, and Cory Blatter, who placed third at 155 and is at the same weight again.

Ryan Mears, the 126-pounder, was fourth as a sophom*ore but lost in overtime to "three-time state champion Scott Barrett from Great Falls High in the state semifinals last year and didn't place. Those three, plus 167-pounder' Dave Wester and 185-pounder Bob Cox, provide the bulk of CMR's varsity experience. Cox was the, 185-pounder all last year while" Wester was at 167 most of the sea---son. But 10 of CMR's 12 varsity per- formers Saturday in the first-; tournament of the season, the Bil-lings Invitational, will be seniors. Other teams in the tourney will Great Falls High, Billings Billings Senior, Miles City, Hardin and Glasgow.

The six lightest weights will all be manned by seniors. At 98 will -be Randy Nygard, who has finally gained enough weight to compete at 98. He wrestled there on the JVs but was underweight last year. At 105 Mike Loveland just beat out junior Matt Wavra in CMR's wres- tle-offs earlier this week. Lsast year he was close but couldn't quite beat Fanning, who took ond in the state at 98.

The 112-pounder will be Mike Stokes and at 119 will be Gary Blair. Mears holds down the 126- pound weight class while Terry-, Aline, Joe Aline's brother, will be at 132. Junior Brian Imbrescia is at 138 and Rodger is at 145. At 155 will be Blatter, at 167 it's Wester and at 185 it will be Cox. The heavy- -weight, and the only non-letterman on the varsity now, will be junior---Bryan Palmer.

"You've got to have a good nu-cleus of seniors to win state," brecht said. "So if things come to- gether for us we could be tough." CMR will sponsor a 16-team Christmas tournament on Dec. 22" and 23 that will bring together two" of the three state champions. BOISE, Idaho (AP) So you consider the life of a professional athlete is a glamorous, exciting one? Consider the case of JoAnn Bur-rell, for a brief time a member of the professional Chicago Hustle team. She's back in Boise, a little disillusioned. Miss Burrell, a 6-foot star for Boise State for four seasons, was drafted by the Chicago team for women's professional basketball. It sounded exciting: Furnished apartments would be provided. Transportation was available for girls who did not bring their own cars.

And there was a chance to compete with the best women basketball players in the country. But when she got there, she found Bison Continued from page 11, column 6 Rod Lyman, who was hurt in the state semifinals last year and otherwise probably would have placed. Three-time state champion Scott Barrett has graduated and Fritz Campbell, a two-time state champion who Will be a heavy favorite to win a third championship this season, has moved to Havre with his family. Lyman will miss the Bison's opening action, Saturday in the Billings Invitational, because he came out for practice late. But he should be ready to go after this week.

The Bison will have sophom*ores at three weights and juniors at three others Saturday. At 98 will be sophom*ore Bill Betts and at 105 will be another soph, Dave Arbuck-le. He's had considerable AAU experience with the North Montana Wrestlers. The third sophom*ore will be Scott Kline at 126. Also in the lineup at Billings will be Weiler, a junior, at 112, senior Roger Vial at 119, senior Ron Connors at 132, junior Mike Ranieri at 138, junior Fred Sterhan at 145, senior Don May at 155, Tucker at 167, senior Ron Miller at 185 and senior Chuck Stroop at heavyweight.

Connors wrestled as a sophom*ore but not last year. Another sophom*ore, Scott Scho-er, could move in at 98 after he recovers from the flu. And junior Mike Marzetta, a 126-pounder, could challenge at that weight, Noon said. "I think we'll be competitive with other teams," Noon said. "It depends on how hard our guys work." The Billings tournament begins at noon Saturday, with the championship round scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
