Over the last week, I was given the opportunity to work the Men’s and Women’s Mid-American Conference Tournament at @RocketMortgage Field House in Cleveland, Ohio. Although I learned many things working this incredible event, one event happened that sticks out more than the others. It was Friday night, and I had one of those moments in your life when you realize you're in the right field. It was a semifinal match between Akron and Ohio. To build context, it was a barn burner of a game. Going back and forth late in the second half, Akron was able to sneak away with a win after Ohio threw a Hail Mary just short to lose. But as the game was over, I was standing by the Ohio bench. The team was quiet. The fans and band cheering and crying as the players walked off the court after an incredible season was a heartfelt moment. Seeing all the guys in a heartbreaking defeat, I was assigned my next task: to escort Ohio to their locker room and press conference. This is where I had my moment. Waiting for Akron to finish their press conference, I talked with the guys as they waited their turn to be interviewed. We talked like old friends catching up for the first time in years. While talking, other players, both Akron and Ohio, were walking past Ohio’s coach showing their respect to each other. It is the side of sports you usually don’t see. I will never forget this moment in the hallway of RocketMortgage, which I pictured below. It was awesome to live in the moment. It didn’t matter that I had been at RocketMortgage for 15 hours. It didn’t matter that my phone was dead. It didn’t matter it was midnight. It didn’t matter I was on 4 hours of sleep and an insane amount of caffeine. What matters is that I built a memory that I will remember forever. And the best part about it? I got to do it again the next day working the Men's and Women’s Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship. While working, I heard someone yell from the stands yell my name. I turned my head and who was it? The Ohio player I talked to the night before. You could not make this up. It was so full circle and I’ll never forget it. I would like to keep the conversations between the players to myself, but I wish to challenge you all. Go out there and do something to get involved. Even if it’s voluntary, that is where some of the best moments occur in people's lives. Experiences help build the resume, but the memories will never die. Also, if you are ever interviewing anyone across any industry, I always recommend asking them what their “moment” was when they realized they were in the right field. I do this when I interview people because not only is it an incredible story for you to hear, it is an incredible memory for the person to recall that made them smile.I would like to thank Jeremy Guy, Ryan Sosic, Lily Wittman, and everyone else I met along the way working this event. It was such an incredible experience, and I cannot thank you enough for such an incredible opportunity!

I'm admittedly biased but this article and others like it are frustrating. Despite limited paragraphs, the writer manages to still find room to refer to Lexi Thompson’s presence at the Shriners Children's Open as 'silly', 'highly questionable' and 'without logic.' Lexi's article-acknowledged recent strong form and decade of excellence leading up to this event are no match against the writer's unbridled cynicism, ultimately deriding her presence as a 'lethargic sideshow.' The author has the wherewithal to reference past similar efforts by Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam, but only to reduce the impact of those efforts to 'heartwarming' or 'interesting'. Forget that the great Lydia Ko has referred to Annika's start as one of the inspirational moments in her life. Never mind the 800,000-strong increase in women golfers since 2019 (shortly after #LPGA pro Brittany Lincicome played on the PGA TOUR). Why focus on these or any other potentially positive outcomes, right? No one knows how Lexi will do. But I do know that young girls and others curious about the game are going to see this. Many will be inspired. And, ultimately, more golfers are going to be created as a result. If you love the game, that should be more than enough reason to root for her this week. #sponsorship #golfbusiness #sportsbiz #brandmarketing
