Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel. Wolf-pack parcel goes to Explore By ED SHAMY STAFF WRITER It could have been a nosy baggage handler's nightmare.

A mature red wolf was flown from Pittsburgh to Roanoke on Wednesday morning, and ended his day at the Explore Park. The wolf, an endangered species, was sent by the Good Zoo in Wheeling, W.Va. The journey was uneventful, and by nightfall the wolf was in his new home a 50-foot-by-100-foot pen in the Explore Park. He'll be joined there by year's end by a female red wolf. The shewolf is to be sent by a zoo in Tacoma, Wash.

The pair will live, and hopefully breed, in a pen at the park. They are the first animals enrolled in the American Center for Rare and Endangered Species, a cooperative venture of the Explore Park and the Mill Mountain Zoo. Fewer than 30 red wolves are believed to survive in the wild; another 135 or so live in captivity. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is overseeing the national program to boost the population.

Though there are no plans to reintroduce the native red wolf in Virginia, the animals have been released at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee..
