Game Recap: Baseball |
BOONE, N.C. (April 23, 2024)– The ETSU baseball team trailed by as many as seven runs on Tuesday night at Appalachian State. The Bucs, however, battled back to tie the game at 11-11 in the top of the eighth before the Mountaineers ultimately won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, 12-11. With Tuesday's loss, the Bucs move to 24-14 on the season.
For the 13th time this season, the Bucs scored 10 or more runs in a game. Both Blake Jacklin and Ryan McCarthy hit home runs in the contest. For Jacklin, it is his third home run in the past four games, while for McCarthy it is his first long ball of the 2024 campaign. On top of the home runs, Cameron Sisneros (3-for-4) and former Mountaineer JD Yakubinis (3-for-5) both had three hits on the night. Noah Gent drove in a pair of runs in a 2-for-5 effort at the plate. It extended Gent's hitting streak to 15 games and the two-hit outing was his 18th multi-hit game in 2024.
Appalachian State had things working early in Tuesday's contest. First, the Mountaineer offense brought in three runs in the bottom of the first to stake their starter to an early lead. App State's starter Trey Tujetsch had it dialed in early. He retired the first eight Buccaneers he faced on Tuesday. McCarthy recorded a double of Tujetsch in the bottom of the third for ETSU's first hit on the night.
While the Bucs did not score off that McCarthy double, it seemed like that got the Buccaneer offense going. Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, ETSU scored three runs in the bottom half of that inning. However, App State seemed to match the Bucs run for run through the middle innings. After the three-run fourth, the Bucs scored one in the fifth, three in the sixth, three more in the seventh and then one more in the eighth to tie the score at 11-11.
Jamie Palmese, who did not start the game, drove in two key runs in the sixth before McCarthy brought ETSU within one run, 11-10, with his three-run blast in the seventh. Jacklin would notch his home run in the eighth to knot the score at 11.
ETSU got a stellar relief appearance Landon Crumbley on Tuesday. Crumbley entered the game in the seventh and threw back-to-back scoreless innings to aid ETSU's comeback attempt. App State, however, was able to string three singles together against Crumbley in the ninth to win Tuesday's matchup, 12-11.
ETSU will return home to Thomas Stadium on Friday when it opens a three-game series against The Citadel. Friday's series opener is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch in Johnson City.
