Speaking of which, as I start to further develop my personal headshot style. I think I’m starting to to settle into a gray background with and without an accent light as my go-to look. It’s understated yet classy. I can do flat white or black as well but medium gray is just classy.

Aside from my new obsession with professional headshots, I’m still shooting events around OC. Vital Link held a networking event at FLDWRK in Tustin that was a blast to shoot.

And Cypress High School held their graduation at Handel Stadium. I was lucky enough to get field access and I brought along new favorite lens that gets me close to all the action.

If you are new here, events are my bread and butter. I charge $100 per hour of on-location photography. That yields about 50 usable images per hour. This can be for private events like galas or fundraisers. You can check out my events portfolio here.

Also, if you run youth programs, I take images of kids in action. A long while back, I shot some images for the Anaheim YMCA Swim Program and Camp Meihana. These photos read like brand images much more than snapshots of an event. These can be used for years of program promotion, in fact many of my images on their website ARE photos from this same shoot.

We’ve all been there, you’re at a gathering and a group photo is about to happen and you get the last minute invite to join. You walk up and find your place awkwardly standing on the side of the established group. You’re with the group but you’re not with the group. Here’s some tips to take better group photos.

  1. Don’t be the last one to join and you’ll never find yourself in this position. If you think a photo is about to happen, join immediately and make your way to the center of the group and jockey for position.

  2. If you are at the bookend of the group, you need to anchor yourself. Do this by by making a physical connection with your neighbor, this will anchor you the group instead of standing awkwardly alone. You can do this with a arm over the shoulder, hand around the waist or bent elbow outward to make a triangle shape. You can also try to stagger your body behind your neighbor to close the gap but it’s not as powerful as a physical connection.

  1. Lastly, you can just own it and be disconnected from the group but strike a pose or hand gesture to bring attention to yourself and activate the space you occupy in the photo.

Ok, this one is less of a fancy tip and more of a “ok, this is actually kinda scary”.

If you’re like me, sometimes you exchange images with strangers on the internet a la OfferUp since you can’t message images in the app. What you might not realize is that unless you turn it off in the settings, every photo you take is geotagged and that info is included when you or someone you love shares a photo to someone via Messages.

Try it yourself, look in your Messages and download a photo that someone sent you to your camera roll. Then find it in your Photos app and swipe up. Chances are the geotagging data is there. It’s pretty insane how much information is embedded in every photo you take. You might inadvertently give your address to someone without realizing it.

Of course this feature is awesome for seeing all your photos on a map but not that cool when sharing images with others. Fortunately, you can strip this info out when you share it. On the very top of the share screen, there is a button that says “Options”. Here you can choose to turn off Location when sharing.

When Logan was little, I took a million photos of him doing nothing at all. Since we all know that our eldest child paves the way and the younger children often walk that same path, I realized that I don’t have any many photos of Miles’ little moments. So I’m trying to focus more on capturing the fleeting moments of his toddlerhood.
