The Gujarat Titans have announced the replacement for their star pacer Mohammed Shami, who will not take part in the Indian Premier League 2024 season. GT have named Sandeep Warrier as a replacement for Shami. The star pacer is currently in rehabilitation after a successful ankle surgery. Shami had been injured since the ODI World Cup 2023 and has not played since. In fact Shami had to take injections throughout the ODI World Cup period to subside pain in his Achilles Heel.
Warrier will join GT for his base price of Rs 50 lac, an IPL press release said.
On the other hand, Mumbai Indians added rising star from the U19 World Cup - Kwena Maphaka to the squad as a replacement for Dilshan Madushanka.
Meanwhile, Dilshan Madushanka was ruled out of IPL 2024 due to an injury. Kwena Maphaka – the left-arm pacer – represented South Africa at the recently concluded ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup and was named the Player of the Tournament. He will join MI for his base price of INR 50 Lac.
SHAMI'S SUCCESSFUL SURGERY
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami underwent a successful heel operation in late February, and mentioned that he would require some time to fully regain his fitness. Earlier reports had indicated that Shami would undergo surgery in the United Kingdom (UK). On 27 February, Monday, he shared pictures on his social media account, providing updates on his injury and the operation.
“Just had a successful heel operation on my Achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet,” Shami wrote.
Shami has not played any form of cricket since India’s World Cup 2023 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium back on November 19. He missed the T20I series against Australia at home, followed by the tour of South Africa.
India also missed Shami’s services in their ongoing 5-match Test series against Ben Stokes’ England. In his absence, the likes of Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep and others have got chances.
Earlier in January, Shami said that he was hoping to recover for the series against England, but the rub of the green did not go his way.
"My rehabilitation is well on track and the medical experts at NCA are happy with my progress," Shami had told the Times of India.
